She was born on the 9th of April 1981 to Richard G. Tappen and Sheila M. Tappen. They are of Germanic ancestry and she holds American citizenship. She grew up along with her sister named Amanda Tappen.

During her childhood, she used to play basketball and baseball in the boy’s team as there was no girls team.
